India White Gold: Lithium found in the Reasi District of Jammu and Kashmir. |
On 19th February, India’s Minister of Mines made an announcement. They announced that in the Reasi District of Jammu and Kashmir, almost 6 million tons has found. The thing is Lithium Metal, which considered to be White Gold., Chile is in South America at number 1, with 9.2 million tonne reserves, then Australia 2nd at 5.7 million tonnes. Does this mean now, India has 2nd reserve of lithium? Does this mean that India has a lottery? Similar to how the Arab countries become rich due to oil reserves, can India becomes rich due to the lithium reserves?
Importance of
lithium.
There’s no
uncertainty that Lithium now became an extraordinarily valuable metal. In all
smartphones of the brand, the cell phone has either a lithium-ion or
Lithium-polymer battery. Additionally, for any electric vehicle manufacturing,
every company knows prefers to use a lithium battery. That is because, in
comparison to the other types of batteries, such as lead-acid batteries, the
lifespan of lithium batteries is almost 10th times longer. They weigh about
50%-60% lighter. And have higher efficiency. So much so that, for storing
renewable energy, power grids are also using lithium batteries.

Inferred Resources.
Resources quantity
& quality can be estimated. But we cannot say for sure the number of
lithium reserves present here, the quantity of the Lithium, or whether it will
be economically possible to mine or not nine. we don’t know this. The costs,
and environmental impact, we don’t know so much about all these.

Inferred Resources. |
Look at this graph,
the top of inferred Resources are the Indicated Resources. And then Measured
Resources, Proven Resources, and Probable Resources.
- Y-Axis represents how much we know about the geological area.
- X-Axis represents other factors. Such as whether it’ll be economically possible to mine or not.
Category.
The Ecological Survey
of India has put it into the G3 category of the initial assessment. They’ve
claimed that more research and studies are needed to take it up to G1 or G2
category. Once they reach those categories, they can be considered minable
reserves. After that, the Ministry of Mines would be able to know the exact
tonnage of Lithium present. How much of it could be extracted and what its
quality, for reaching this stage, it can take up to 5-7 years, before they can
commercially exploit it.

India White Gold: Lithium found in the Reasi District of Jammu and Kashmir. |
Two years ago, in
2021, similar news came from Karnataka when the government announced that they
found 1600 tonnes of Lithium. Even this was in the inferred category. But in
current news of Lithium reserve, the quantity of Lithium is much higher. So,
that is significantly more important.
