HoFormula 1 game actually works.

What is its Billion-Dollar Business Model? And should Formula 1  even be considered a sport? Formula 1 began in France in 1906, and a race was held. It was called the French Grand Prix. These words should sound like/graend priks/, But since it’s a French term. It’s pronounced as / grahn pri:/ It literally means the Great Prize. Since then, the name Grand Prix carry on And till now, during Formula 1 racing this same is used. Back then, car race did not test the speed of the driver. Rather, they focused on the toleration of the driver. The race would start from one city and end to other city,on normal roads.. The first Grand Prix race lasted 25 hours and was held in Le Mans. The film, For vs Ferrari, was based on this race.In 1904, an international association was established. It was now known as FiA. Abbrivated as Federatin Internstinale de I’Automobile .Governing body of Formula 1, FiA.Similar to ICC for cricket and FIFA for football.  It was only after 1946 that professional racing began to be held in an organized manner.

  • Now in 2023, Championship season, there will be 23 races. Most of the teams in Formula 1 racing are car constructors. The unique aspect of Formula 1 racing is winning a Formula 1 Championship doesn’t depend only on the skill of the driver, it also depends on how well the car is designed. This game is a struggle with technology as well. To check who can manufacture the fastest car. That is why many car manufacturers participate in the Formula 1 Championship. Other than the publicity of these companies, Another benefit to them is that new technologies emerge during Formula 1 car manufacturing. These alterations can be later use for manufacturing consumer cars.
  • For example Carbon Fiber material that is used in Porsche, BMW, and Aston Martin cars now, was used for the first time in 1981 by Mclaren in Formula 1. The first company, that builds car chassis with this material. That was expensive but light material. It improves fuel efficiency.

·           Speed

The world record for the fastest speed is 372.5Km/hr. In 2016, This record was made during a race in Mexico. This speed record was held by Valtteri Bottas. But other than in an actual race, The full power of an F1 car was seen in 2005, When team Honda achieved 397.7 Km/hr. This is the purpose of the record test. This was conducted in a very special place named BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS. A dry lake bed where for kilometers around there’s only a plain field. The speed of the F1 cars is faster than the takeoff speed of an airplane. When a normal airplane takes off, its speed is around 250 km/hr.

Why Formula1 Cars not Fly?.

Had there been wings on Formula 1 cars, these cars can fly, Even without wings, Formula 1 cars could easily take off. That is the reason for the peculiar shape at the back of the cars. At end of the cars, wings are made on the car to counter the wings that the plane has. The shape of the wings of airplanes creates a lift. High pressure and low pressure on either side permit the plane to take off. In the F1 cars, it’s the opposite. A negative lift is created, So that car can push down onto the track. The downforce produced is equal to 5G. A force of 5 times equal weight of the car pushes it downwards. This provides friction to tires enabling them to execute sharp turns.

Formula1 as Dangeriou sport.

Formula 1 is an extremely dangerous sport. It is said to be one of the most dangerous sports. In total fifty-two drivers have died since Formula 1 racing began. The most famous accident was the three-time champion AYRTON Senna’s death in 1994.

Several steps are taken to made Formula 1 races safe.

  1. Helmets is compulsory. These helmets are stronger than common helmets. They have carbon-fiber head and neck support. So that the vertebrate of a driver can be secure  in case of any crash
  2. The suit that the drivers wear is made of multi-layered fireproof material.
  3. Drivers are equipped with biometric gloves, the gloves are fitted with sensors that constantly measure and transmit vitals such as heartbeats to medical staff.
  4. The seatbelts in the car are so tight that the help of another person is required to fasten the seatbelt.
  5. There are fire extinguishers in the cars too
  6. Most groundbreaking innovation in terms of safety was in 2018 when Halo is introduced. Halo is a steel bar,  placed above the head in these cars. Made up of Grade 5 titanium. this purpose is to protect the driver’s head in case the car is upturned.  since then it has been 4 to 5 years, and this innovation has saved the lives of many drivers. The halo is a strong part of the F1 car. It is so enough to sustain the weight of 2 African elephants on top of it.

Business model of Formula 1 Race.

Two types of companies are involved in Formula 1 racing.:

     1:The constructor companies.

The constructor companies, make cars. Presently the, constructor companies are ALPHA, ROMEO, ALPHATAURI, ALPINE, ASTIN, MARTIN, FERRARI, HAAS, MCLAREN, MERCEDES, RED BULL, and WILLIAMS.

In a Formula 1 Championship, there’s a winning Driver and a winning manufacturer. Each team consist of two drivers. A team can be a manufacturer champion by taking into account the, performance of both drivers. But a driver championship can be won when a driver gets the most points at an individual level. So the design of the car plays an important role. Many experts argue that more than the skills of the driver, the construction of the car is more important for winning a race. So, sometimes best drivers do not win as many championships.

      2:  The Engine manufacturer companies.

Only four companies are engine manufacturers, FERRARI, MERCEDES, RENAULT, and HONDA. Ferrari’s team is the most successful in the history of Formula 1. Ferrari’s team won 16 constructor titles and 15 driver titles.

Expenditure & Income.

  • But, interestingly, it is a highly risky business for companies to participate in Formula 1. Let’s look at the financials of Red Bull. This team is currently  Constructor Championship, and the winning drivers are also from this team. In 2018, their sister team Toro Rosso spend $181.1 million. And their revenue was at $183.6 million. Their spending and earnings had a minute difference. Their profit was only $1.8 million. It’s very little profit considering the money spent here. And this was a top–level team. The companies believe that the return on investment they’d get from other sources would be much better. Such as publicity and the progress in technology.
  • In 2022, FiA placed a cap for teams on the budget. $140 million. No team can spend more than this. So to maintain equality in the competition. This year, in 2023this cap, has been lowered to $ 135 million.

Salary of Drivers.

The salari of the drivers, paid by team. But that is kept outside the budget cap restrictions. So there’s is no limit of salary paid to the drivers. It means that similar to other sports, there’s a large inequality in the salaries paid to the drivers. Some premium & top-level drivers get higher salarie than others. Such as Max Verstappen, he has been Driver Champion for the last two years, It’s estimated, that last year he was paid around $ 60 million in the year. Compare it to Mick Schumacher’s salary, who was gets only $ 1 million for the same year. The salary depends on several things other than the driver’s success. It is also dependent on the team for which the driver is driving. the level it is at and how much money it has. Mick Schumacher's race for the Haas team that is still growing.

FERNANDO ALONSO.

Many F1 experts believe that Fernando Alonso has been the best driver in the history of F1, In terms of technique. But he won only 2 championships. In 2005 and 2006 with Renault. Since the construction of the car play an important role in this game. That means that a large amount of money is involved here. To some extent, with a huge amount of money could use better technology and strategies for their cars.

Improvements of Formula 1 Race.

Today, the Formula 1 sport is often criticized as a useless sport. That no one is benefiting from these car races. And that it merely causes environmental pollution and nothing else.Perhaps, Some points of criticism aree valid. This is why Formula E has been introduced. Wherein only electric cars would be racing.

Till 2039, Formula E rights have been assigned by the FiA. After this, it is expected that Formula 1 and Formula E would be merged. They will be one sport. And only electric cars would be used for this race. What do you think about the Formula 1 race? Comment below to let me know.
